Ævintýri – Mývatn Accommodation

Kringum Mývatn

Róaðu taktinn í ferðamátanum og notaðu reiðhjól til að kynnast svæðinu betur. Það þarf ekki að fara nema 5 – 10 km til að skoða stærstu gerfigíga á Íslandi, undralandið Höfða með dýrðlegu samspili hraunmyndana, vatns og gróðurs og sjálft Hverfjall sem er risavaxinn sprengigígur, 396 m hár. Svo er upplagt að heimsækja Fuglasafn Sigurgeirs þar sem finna má uppstoppaða fugla af næstum hverri einustu tegund sem verpir á Íslandi. Heimsókn í Jarðböðin svíkur engan og þegar fólk fer að svengjast af öllum þessum ævintýrum er hægt að setjast inn á eitthvert af kaffihúsunum á svæðinu eða kanski fá sér pizzu með reyktum Mývatnssilungi! Við mælum með að njóta en ekki þjóta – og reiðhjólin er hægt að leigja hjá okkur.

Mýflug

Earth Lagoon

Drawing on a centuries-old tradition, Mývatn Nature Baths offer bathers a completely natural experience that begins with a relaxing dip amidst clouds of steam rising up from a fissure deep in the Earth’s surface, and ends with a luxurious swim in a pool of geothermal water drawn from depths of up to 2.500 meters.

Hverir – Mud pots

At this area, also known as Hverir, you will see many smoking fumaroles and boiling mud pots, surrounded by sulphur crystals of many different colours. This sulphur gives the area an overwhelming smell of egg.

Hverfjall

Hverfjall is 396 meter (1,300 ft) high tephra explosion crater. It is located near the eastern shore of Lake Myvatn in North Iceland. Resembling a black ash cone of mammoth proportions, you can walk up the steep slopes and around the crater’s rim for otherworldly and awesome view of the surrounding landscape

Dimmuborgir is a magnificent lava landscape with extraordinary formations, columns, caves, and arches created by the flow of a lava lake over a marshy area some 2300 years ago.

Höfði – Lava formations

Höfði is a beautiful recreational area on the east shore of the Lake Mývatn. Thousands, maybe dozen of thousand trees and the Kálfastrandavogar lava pillars makes this area so unique in Iceland.

Skútustaðagígar pseudocraters

The biggest pseudocraters in Iceland are the Skútustaðagígar pseudocraters in the Mývatn area in North-Iceland. They are amongst the many extraordinary sights of the Mývatn area, and one of the most interesting natural phenomena in Iceland.

Sigurgeir’s Bird Museum - Mývatn

The museum has about 330 stuffed birds and about 500 eggs. The gallery has 280 birds and 300 eggs on display. The museum has all Icelandic breeding birds except 2.

Askja

Askja is an enormous caldera and central volcano in the Dyngjufjöll mountains, north of Vatnajökull glacier. The caldera is a bedrock subsidence located above a massive magma chamber, and is still ‘in the making’.

Dettifoss

The Dettifoss waterfall is the most powerful waterfall in Europe, 500 cubic meters of water per second plunge over the edge. Dettifoss is 45 m high and 100m wide. A nice hiking trail, 34km, goes along the canyon from Dettifoss to Asbyrgi. Camping is possible in Vesturdalur.

Ásbyrgi

Ásbyrgi is one of the wonders of nature, a well-forested horse-shoe-shaped canyon in Öxarfjörður. Ásbyrgi is a part of Jökulsárgljúfur canyon, within the Vatnajökull National Park.

Krafla

Krafla is a caldera, part of a greater volcanic system of the same name, located north of Lake Mývatn in North Iceland. It is one of the country’s most explosive volcanoes, having gone off approximately 29 times since the country was first settled.
